The essays that follow are taken from the book Български фрески: празник на корена (Bulgarian Frescoes: Feast of the Root) published by Omophor (Sofia, Bulgaria) in 2013 and are the fruit of a pilgrimage between 2006 and 2012 that took in 140 Bulgarian monasteries, many of them abandoned. The essays are on different themes and purport to show something of what makes Bulgarian frescoes unique. The text is by Tsvetanka Elenkova, the photographs and English translation are by Jonathan Dunne. Please use the drop-down menu ‘Frescoes’ to access each essay, or click on the relevant link.
