Bov

Bov is a small village located sixty kilometres north of Sofia. It is unusual in that it boasts two waterfalls, both of which are worth a visit – Bovska Skaklya and Pod Kamiko. Bovska Skaklya is perhaps more dramatic, but Pod Kamiko is no less beautiful and is reached by a circular ecopath with many smaller waterfalls en route. It is possible to visit both waterfalls in a day, if you start early, but I would suggest that each waterfall deserves a day of its own.

Bov is situated between Svoge and Mezdra on the II-16 road. The village itself is four kilometres from the road; closer to the road is the railway station, Gara Bov. Both the road and the railway follow the course of the River Iskar, the longest river that runs entirely in Bulgaria, on its way to the Danube.

Bovska Skaklya is located north-west of Gara Bov – it is closer to the village of Zasele. The route to the waterfall can be accessed from Zasele or Gara Bov, depending on whether you want to start from the top or the bottom. Pod Kamiko is located north-east – the route there starts at the stadium in Gara Bov and takes you to the outskirts of the village of Bov before returning another way. The advantage of both these waterfalls is that they can be accessed easily by train (see the excellent Bulgarian State Railways website, www.bdz.bg/en).
