J. M. W. Turner

In this series of articles, I look at the spiritual vision of J. M. W. Turner’s paintings and drawings offered by the Bulgarian poet Tsvetanka Elenkova in her forthcoming poetry collection Turner and the Uncreated Light. Display captions and catalogue entries are informative, but they tend to offer a merely physical description of a painting’s contents and history. But is there a deeper level of meaning hidden inside the works themselves, a spiritual interpretation? This is what the poet Tsvetanka Elenkova asks herself in the poems that make up this collection. I endeavour to present this vision in the articles that follow, which can be accessed using the drop-down menu ‘J. M. W. Turner’.
