The Creed

The Creed is Jonathan Dunne’s last book on language, the fruit of twenty-one years’ research. It was written over six months in 2025. Here is a description:

Language is revelation. We don’t realize this. We employ language as a tool, to get our message across. But words contain their own meaning. They have something to teach us, a message they would like to convey. In this sense, words are like fossils. If we examine them, we can learn about the identity of God, about how the world was created, about the purpose of human life and what happens to us when we die. In part I of his book The Creed, Jonathan Dunne reveals how we can access this meaning, following a simple set of rules, according to phonetics (how sounds are produced in the mouth), the alphabet, and letters’ appearance. In part II, he uses this information to show what language has to say about how the world was brought into being, about the cycle of nature, the progression of human life, the word at the centre of language, and the importance of having belief. He also explains how paradox can be an indicator of spiritual truth, even if – or precisely because – it can appear contradictory. He ends by looking at eternity, when we as words are taken into the mind of the translator and translated into another language. Language is like the environment – we see it as being out there, put there for our use and benefit, for us to do what we like with (this is how we understand freedom). But until we learn to appreciate their intrinsic value, we are missing a crucial dimension. It all begins with the Book of Genesis, when God opened his mouth and spoke… If the world was made through the act of speech, it means we ourselves and the world around us are language, language is not confined to a page, and this has important consequences.
